Design Build Fly

Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance.

About Us

Aeronautics at UT Dallas

Present Design: The team is constructing a 5 foot wingspan turboprop, capable of holding a payload of 5kg and carry a 20 foot banner behind the plane.

Present Challenges: Performing higher-level design analysis, working with composite materials, implementing stability and control equations into our design.

Future: Obtaining a high score in the initial proposal will give the team a higher chance of success with sponsors. Creating flight-worthy aircraft by the end of November will prepare us for the report (Due February).

Competition History

Banner Tow Passenger Plane

4/10/20 - 4/15/20

The objective for this year is to design and validate an aircraft capable of carrying passengers and towing a banner. The plane will have a maximum wingspan of 5 feet and must be able to take off from a 20-foot runway. It will also be able to securely carry multiple passengers and their respective luggage, as well as remotely deploy and tow a banner for multiple laps.

Aircraft Carrier Support Plane

4/10/19 - 4/15/19

The objective is to design, analyze, and manufacture a versatile aircraft to assist in carrier operations. The aircraft must have folding surfaces to transition into a stowed configuration, as well as the ability to remotely unfold and lock into the flight configuration. The design must also have a tail hook for restraint during power up and release for take-off. The aircraft will perform one ground mission and three flight missions consisting of a delivery mission without a payload, a reconnaissance mission, and an attack mission that utilizes the payload.
